I Just LOVE Cool Summer Nights

Summer has been great so far here in northeast PA. We’ve had lots of sunny beautiful days, some humid ones too (can’t get away without those), and just enough rain to keep the plants alive without too much watering. One of my favorite times is after the heat of the day has gone (around sunset), Kurt and I will take Rayne, our pup out for a run in the field and enjoy the coolness of the evening.

That’s when I love having a light summery shawl to throw over my shoulders. It helps keep me warm when it’s just a touch on the cool side. Light shawls are also the perfect accessory to throw in your purse on your way out the door in case the AC is on in the restaurant (or wherever you’re going) and its colder than you thought. Each of these summer-time shawl patterns have features I love in a summer shawl design. They either use a light weight yarn or have an open airy weave.

A Summer Shawl Round-Up!

So you can have the perfect shawl no matter where you are going I have collected 20 of my favorite light summer shawl crochet patterns. 10 of them are paid patterns and the other 10 are free patterns. Below the photo for each pattern I will include a small description containing the name of the pattern, the designer, the skill level, and whether the pattern is free or has a fee. I included paid patterns because as a pattern designer myself I know it takes an awful lot of work to make a pattern that is ad free and printable and I want to support designers so they can keep making those amazing patterns. This list is organized based on skill level.

Update: Since Craftsy became BluPrint, many of the items in this round up were discontinued. I have removed those items, so this list is a bit shorter than it once was. I’m so sorry for any inconvenience, but I don’t want to offer patterns that aren’t really available.

The patterns below include beginner, easy, and intermediate skill levels.  I provided several pattern skill levels to not only cater to several skill levels, but also to help challenge those of you that are still crocheting “easy” patterns, but are looking for something to challenge yourself.

For those of you who don’t know beginner patterns are typically the easiest. They are designed for crocheters who are new to the craft and are still learning basic stitches. Easy patterns are for those of you that have a good understanding of basic stitches, color changes, and some simple shaping or blocking.  Intermediate patterns are those that usually have a variety of stitch patterns, and techniques.

A lot of the patterns listed below call for either light (DK) or worsted (medium) weight yarn. Lion Brand’s Mandala yarn is one of my favorite light weight yarns. The self-striping it gives to a pattern is great for anyone who loves color but doesn’t want to weave in a ton of ends! This Ferris Wheel Yarn (also from Lion Brand) has the same self striping but in a worsted weight yarn!
