My Spiral Star Top Basket weave Beanie crochet pattern is a fun, easy design. Hand-make your own winter hat that is warm and thick, perfect for cold winter days and enjoying the snow! This free crochet pattern works up fast and results in a lovely cap. The unique cabling on top results in a beautiful spiral star pattern.
Start of the Spiral Star
This basket weave beanie crochet pattern started from my Basket Weave Ponytail Hat Crochet Pattern. This gorgeous ponytail winter cap has the same basket weave as the spiral star top basket weave beanie featured here! I am also working on an ear warmer pattern with the same basket weave design. Can you tell how much I LOVE this thick and warm design!? š
When I first tried to convert the ponytail version into a closed top version I stuck with the original cabling pattern, which resulted in nothing special in the closed top version. So I tweaked it a little to make this beautiful spiral star top!
Those of you that have tried my basket weave ponytail hat pattern may notice that this pattern is wider at the base and not as tall. This pattern is 10 stitches wider in the basket weave portion.
There is an entire section of basket weave missing from this pattern. Even though the hat is only 1 row longer than its ponytail counterpart, but since you start with the closed top and not a ponytail holder you have more of the crown to create before you can start with the basket weave portion. I found this was the best shape for the hat without the ponytail hole.
About the Pattern:
Skill: Beginner/Easy (Use of double crochet, front post double crochet, and back post double crochet stitches).
Size: Currently this pattern is a one size fits most pattern. The finished hat should be approximately 7 Ā½ inches from crown to outside edge and 10 inches wide at the base.
Materials Needed:
- Worsted Weight (4) yarn. Approximately 230 yds. I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn for this pattern.
- H8/5 mm hook or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Stitch Markers
- Tapestry or yarn needle.
- Scissors
Gauge: 5 rows x 5 FPDC and 5 BPDC sts = 1 3/8 inches tall x 3 inches wide
Stitches to Know:
Magic Circle
Slip Stitch (SS)
Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC): yarn over, insert hook from front to back to front around post of indicated stitch, yarn over, pull through post (you should have 3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through first 2 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through the 2 remaining loops on the hook.
Back post Double Crochet (BPDC): yarn over, insert hook from back to front to back around post of indicated stitch, yarn over, pull through post (you should have 3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through first 2 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through the 2 remaining loops on the hook.
Notes:
- Rows 2 ā 27 are worked in the round. Do not join at the end of the row, continue to work around the post of the next stitch.
- Join at the ends of rows 1 and 28 as indicated.
- Numbers in parenthesis at the end of each row represent a stitch count. Be sure to check your count after each row. This is especially important until you get to row 14 because rows 1 – 13 are the increasing rows, and if your stitch count gets off there then the basket weave pattern will not match up correctly.
- I first worked up this pattern using black yarn, but I found I liked the pattern best in a bright color or in the varied color yarn.
