My Shamrock Granny Square crochet pattern is not just for St Patricks’ Day. You can enjoy this fun Irish flower crochet design all year long. This four 4 leaf clover afghan square is perfect to join together and make any size blanket you wish. Or string them together for an easy St. Paddy’s Day garland.
The Shamrock Start
This shamrock granny square crochet pattern started with the shamrock applique pattern I made last year. Unfortunately, I was a bit late with that pattern for St Patrick’s Day, but I made sure that this pattern was out with lots of time for you to whip some of these up!
The shamrock is probably the “hardest” part of this pattern. The reason for the quotes is because even the shamrock isn’t really too difficult. All the stitches used for this pattern are easy. The difficulty comes from the multiple direction changes you are instructed to perform.
Even if you are a beginner, if you are attentive to your work and patient with yourself and the pattern, you could probably tackle this four leaf clover pattern with no problem.
The Yarn
I used worsted weight yarn for this project.
This shamrock granny square crochet pattern calls for 1 skein of each color, but obviously you won’t need the whole skein for a single square.
The shamrock yarn is the least used and I got over 35 Shamrocks from a single skein (and still had some left over!).
The white and orange border yarns were not so economical, I was about to complete all 35 shamrock granny squares with 1 skein of each color, but I felt like I was playing a bit of yarn chicken at the end and I definitely needed another skein of the orange to join the squares together into the shawl I am still working on. I will update this post with a photo when I am finished <3
Let’s Get Started with The Pattern!
Skill Level
Easy. This pattern uses simple stitches, but there are multiple direction changes when making the shamrock. An ambitious beginner could get this pattern done.

Finished square is 6 inches wide and 6.5 inches tall

Pattern Notes
The base circle is made up of 5 sets of [2 DC, Ch1].
Each shamrock leaf will be worked into a set of 2 DC on the base circle. This is where the multiple direction changes take place.
Shamrock Pattern:
Base Circle: With Green
Step 1. Ch 4. SS to join and form a ring. You could also use a magic ring for this step.
Step 2. Ch 2 (These count as a DC). 1 DC. Ch 1. [2 DC, ch 1] x4 into the ring. SS to top of ch 2 to join.
Shamrock Stem
Step 3. Pull up a loop through the next DC. (This is the first set of DC you will be working in from the base circle)
Step 4. Using the 2 loops on the hook complete 5 FSC. Ch 1.
You could also choose to Ch 6 and turn. DC into 2nd chain from hook and in each of next 4 chs. Skip step 5 if you choose to do this.
Step 5. 5 SS along the foundation chain.
Step 6. SS in ch space between DC sets in base circle.
First Clover Leaf:
Step 7. Ch 1 DC in next st. 2 SC in next st. Ch 1 and turn.
Work step 8 stitches into the 3 stitches you just made. When you turn at the end of this step, you will be looking at the wrong side.
Step 8. DC in next st. SC in next st. DC next st. Ch 1 and turn.
Work step 9 into the 3 stitches you just made. When you turn at the end of this step, you will be looking at the right side again.
Step 9. 2 DC in first DC space. 1 SC in SC space. 3 DC in last DC space.
Step 10. 1 SC in the turning chain space.
The tip of the needle is going through the space described.
Step 11. SS into the next ch 1 space in the base circle.
Repeat steps 7 – 11 for the remaining clover leaves.
After the 4th leaf is completed slip stitch into the last ch 1 space in the base circle and fasten off.
Weave in the ends.

Granny Square Notes
To turn the shamrock into a granny square you first need to crochet a base for the granny clusters. In the next section I refer to the shamrock leaves as follows:
I also describe the attachment locations at left, right, or center of a specified leaf. If you are looking at the right side of your shamrock, these stitches should always look the same.
Granny Square Pattern
Granny Cluster Base: with White
For the cluster base you will start on the 1st leaf.
A. Attach with a DC to the right side of the leaf. Ch 5.
B. SC to the left side of the 1st leaf. Ch 5.
C. [DC, Ch 5, DC] to the center of the 2nd leaf. Ch 5
D. SC to the right side of the 3rd leaf. Ch 5.
E. [DC, Ch 5, DC] to the left side of the 3rd leaf. Ch 5.

First Chain space: Ch 2. [YO, insert hook in chain 5 space. YO and draw up a loop. YO and pull through first 2 loops on hook.] Repeat once more and then YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook. Ch 2. Cl3DC in same ch 5 space. Ch 2.
For the rest of this round, work 2 Cl3DC in each ch 5 space around. Chain 2 in between clusters, except for the corner of the square. Chain 6 between clusters at each corner.
SS to top of first cluster and tie off. Cut and weave in ends.
Orange Cluster Row
With orange yarn on your hook, work Cl3DC in every chain 2 space around. Ch 2 between clusters along the edge. At the corners [Cl3DC, Ch 6, Cl3DC, Ch 2].
SS to top of first cluster and tie off. Cut and weave in ends.
