The Lemony Sunshine super bulky baby blanket is a free crochet pattern made from Baby Bernat yarn using the lemon peel stitch. It is an easy level crochet pattern resulting in a wonderfully soft and warm – without being too heavy blanket. It is easy to make in whatever size you like! The pattern includes written instructions with photo references.
Inspiration!
This super sulky baby blanket started as a love for the lemon peel stitch. I wanted to make a blanket for my baby, whom I didn’t know the gender of. So I chose a fun gender neutral colorway from a wonderfully soft and fluffy yarn and got to work!
This blanket isn’t as big as a blanket meant for a crib, but it’s large enough to be useful. It is also thick enough to be warm when used as a blanket for the car seat in the winter.

The Hook
The yarn I have recomended above calls for a size 8 mm crochet hook, but I used a slightly larger hook because the lemon peel stitch can be a bit stiff if it is worked too tight and I wanted a nice, loose blankie for my baby.
So I used a 9 mm crochet hook for this pattern. You might notice the hook in my picture says “N” also as the size, but once you get this large the letters don’t always represent the same size. An N hook can be 9 mm or 10 mm, so pay more attention to the mm size notation and your gauge.

The Yarn
For this cozy blanket I used Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn. It is a super bulky yarn made from polyester. Bernat tests this yarn to ensure it is safe for baby and sensitive skin. It’s also machine wash and dryable, making it the perfect yarn for baby projects!
They have tons of colors to choose from, pick your favorite here! You’re going to need about 13 skeins to follow the pattern as I have it written. I used a color called “Sunshine” – hence the name of this super bulky baby blanket.
These are some great alternatives – but pay attention to yardage! You’ll need about 940 yards to make this blanket

Pattern Notes
Make sure to double count your starting chain. If you don’t have the proper chain count to start the pattern it will not turn out correctly.
Because every row starts with a single crochet and ends with a double crochet you will always be working the single crochets into double crochets from the previous row and the double crochets into the single crochets from the row below. This pattern is what gives the lemon peel stitch it’s unique texture.

The chain 1 at the start of the row does not count as a stitch. When you work the first single crochet of the row, it should go into the first stitch of the row.

Make It Your Own!
If you wish to make this blanket with different dimensions, always work a starting chain with an uneven number of stitches and work as many rows as you desire. Changing the dimensions of the blanket will change how many skeins of yarn you need to complete it.
