The free Knotted Cable Scarf crochet pattern uses post stitches to create a fun, textured Celtic knot pattern. This warm and thick scarf uses worsted weight yarn and a size I9 crochet hook. It’s great for women or men, and can be made in self-striping yarn or a solid color! This is an intermediate level written pattern, but if you are a beginner who knows front and back post stitches you’ll be able to tackle this pattern!
Scarf Pattern Beginnings…
This scarf crochet pattern was born of my desire to make a poncho with a simple but elegant Celtic weave design on it. I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for, so I decided to make my own.
Of course, designing a poncho pattern, especially with a Celtic design on it, isn’t as easy as it sounds… So I decided I would start small and work out the logistics of the weave pattern first.
Now that I have a good understanding of my cable pattern, I will begin working on my Celtic Weave Poncho pattern. Don’t worry, I’ll share that with you too once I’ve got it worked out.
Until then… enjoy this one!!
About the Yarn and Hook
Once I decided I had to start with a scarf, I began the fun part! Playing with yarn. I had purchased a bunch of Caron Big Cake yarn when it went on sale last spring at Michael’s. You can also find new and retired colors on Etsy.
The yarn called for a size H8 5 mm crochet hook. It became apparent pretty quickly after I began swatching: I had to switch to a bigger hook. The cables were so tight they were looking stretched.
The I9 5.5 mm crochet hook left the cables tight enough to be neat looking, but not stretched. Especially after it was blocked, the cables lay very nicely. While crocheting the project, it did scrunch and pull in places around the cables. This worked out during the blocking process.

Pattern Notes
- This scarf crochet pattern has a Right Side (RS), which is the side of the project that has the knotted cables. There is also a Wrong side (WS), which is the flat side of the piece.
- Even numbered rows are the Right Side (RS)
- Odd numbered rows are the Wrong Side (WS)
- Ch 2 at the start of each row counts as a double crochet stitch. Including this, each row should have 30 stitches.
- Pattern is made in a flat back and forth fashion, be aware of whether you are working the right or wrong side of the project.
- In order to save space when writing out the line the by line directions, I have used a shorter pattern language than I normally would. For example, where I might write “DC in each of next 4 sts.” I have written “DC in 4.”
- It is essential to ignore the tops of the stitches you have worked the post of. This is especially important when working the crossed stitches. Otherwise you could end up with a lot more than 30 stitches per row. Remember to count!
- There are three portions to this pattern. Rows 1 – 19 make up the beginning section. Rows 20-39 are the middle section. Rows 120-131 are the final section. The middle section makes up the repeat providing most of the length for the pattern. I have repeated this section 5 times for this scarf pattern, but if you desire a longer or shorter scarf simple repeat the middle section fewer times.
Special Stitches
- The places where the “threads” of the cable design are crossing over one another are referred to as the crossed stitches. Each crossed stitch direction has several pieces.
- Firstly, you will be instructed to skip 2 stitches and then work 2 stitches. In the working stitches, you’ll make one of 3 types: FPTC, BPTC, TC. These are the “previously made stitches” that are being worked in front of or behind.
- The final piece of the directions tells you which direction to cross the stitches.
- The first portion of the crossover direction describes whether the stitch is to be worked in front of (a.k.a front crossed) or behind (back crossed) the previously made stitches.
- The second portion of the crossover direction describes the stitch to be worked. It will be one of 3 options: FPTC, BPTC, TC.
- The exact pattern language and what it represents are listed below.
- Rear cross – work the stitches behind the previously made stitches.
- Front cross – work these stitches in front of previously made stitches.
- The crossover stitches are always a form of post treble crochet stitch worked in conjunction with a treble crochet stitch.
- When working the crossed stitches, it is vital to keep track of the proper loops and posts you want to be working. It can be tricky to find the post you want to grab.
- Example of stitch directions:
- The long version of directions would look like this: Sk 2 sts. TC in each of next 2 sts. Working backwards and in front of previously made stitches, FPTC in skipped 2 stitches.
- The pattern version of the same directions looks like this: Sk 2. TC in 2. Front cross, FPTC in skipped 2.
I will be making a tutorial to help with the crossed stitches used in this scarf crochet pattern, and the cowl I am working on and the poncho this is all for 🙂 Please read my special stitch section carefully, it contains a lot of information. If you are really stuck, please hang tight for a few weeks while I work up the tutorial. I will update this post once it has been created.
