Hello Yarn Lover!! I’m sure you’ve heard of Darn Good Yarn by now right? Whether you have or not I’ll tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about this wonderful monthly yarn box from an earth friendly company!
Before I start, I want to let you know that I am a regular paying customer at Darn Good Yarn. I was not asked to give this review in exchange for anything. All my opinions are my own. I simply want to share this amazing yarn lovers subscription because I enjoy it so much!
Darn Good Yarn is Doing Amazing Things!!
They have great yarn, it’s true… but just as importantly Darn Good Yarn is doing great things for humanity and the Earth! Most of the yarn they provide is made from recycled materials, saved from landfills in India.
Doesn’t it make you feel good to know you are supporting a company who does good things for the world and the people in it? After all, we only have the one Earth and if we don’t take care of her, there is no telling what we will be leaving for our children.
Darn Good Yarn is also helping the local people by providing sustainable jobs at fair wages. The good they do for these people helps provide food, education and healthcare. Closer to home, they work continually with various organizations that help people with disabilities to work and live.

You never know what kind of yarn is going to come in your box, but it is always a pleasant surprise! The yarn they provide is enough to complete the included pattern… not that you can’t buy more of the yarn if you want to….
This is a great way to step out of your yarn comfort zone… if you are anything like me, I used to always buy the same kinds of yarn over and over, rarely trying anything new.

What’s In The Box?
1 skein of premium, hand-made Yarn. The information included tells you all about the yarn of the month including the fiber type, color, and how to care for it. They send a variety of yarn weights and fibers including silk, wool, cotton, acrylic, bamboo, and more.
There is enough yarn provided to complete the pattern as written. Don’t worry though, if you love a certain yarn, you can always buy more of it on the Darn Good Yarn Website. They tell you exactly what they’ve sent so you can get the same thing.
A free crochet pattern AND a free knitting pattern. They send both so knitters and crocheters can enjoy this subscription. Or if you know how to do both just follow the pattern you like better! Or maybe you want to just keep the yarn for a future project and not complete the included pattern… that’s fine too!!
Since they send a paper copy, it’s easy to keep every pattern for future reference AND you can get a digital copy of the pattern on the website. They send a lot of beginner and easy patterns, but intermediate patterns will also occassionally be included.
A FREE Mystery Gift. You never know what the gift will be, but they are always fantastic! It’s like a surprise present you buy yourself each month! If you want an additional gift in your box, you can have them add another for $5 more. They ask each month if you’d like an additional gift.
The Not-So-Fine Print
Here are some details and FAQs that people always want to know before signing up for something… I want to make sure you have all your questions answered before you sign up. But in case I miss one, put it in the comments below so I can update the post with the information you want to know!!
A few days before the 1st of each month, your charge will be $13.95. The subscription is $10 and the shipping fee for each month is $3.95. That includes the skein of yarn, the free knitting and crochet patterns, the mystery gift and the shipping. No other fees, EVER! The only way you’ll be charged more is if you add a gift to that month’s yarn box.
You can cancel or pause your subscription at any time. You simply click the “Pause Subscription” button and your subscriptions pauses until you (hopefully) start it up again. There are no fees or costs to cancel your subscription. Remember to cancel or pause before you are charged for the month.
You can get a Darn Good Yarn Box if you live in the US and Canada. Other countries are also included, but they may incur additional shipping costs. Email info@darngoodyarn.com for more information! They are always friendly and helpful!
After signing up, you’ll get your first Darn Good Yarn box in 2 -3 weeks. After that they charge your card automatically on the first of the month and you’ll get that month’s box about a week later.
The Best and Worst of It
The Good
Aside from the amazing yarn, fun crochet and knitting pattern, and surprise gift, all of which are in the “good” column to me…
Darn Good Yarn has excellent customer service!! It is one of my favorite things about them. They are helpful, friendly and best of all… FAST!!
They are looking out for their customers… an example of this…
For my second monthly box, they were a little late getting the boxes out. In addition to sending me an apology email they also sent a free gift! It turned out to be a skein of Banana Yarn!! If you could feel the picture you’d know how squishy and wonderful this fiber is! Since you can’t you’ll have to take my word for it.
How’s that for great customer service?!
The Bad
In the interest of giving a complete, truthful review with all of my experiences I only feel it is fair to tell you about the hook…
I used the beautiful purple crochet hook they sent me for my first month’s pattern…. I wish I hadn’t…
The purple paint wore away where my fingers were holding it AND where my fingernail scraped the tip a few times while I was working into the chains at the start of the pattern. I only used the hook for one pattern, a neck warmer from the first box they sent.
This is a VERY small issue for me as I have lots of other hooks that I like. I haven’t found any paint flecks in my project and the hook still works great, it just isn’t as pretty as it was.
So if you want to keep the hook pretty, don’t use it.

To sum it up, I LOVE my Darn Good Yarn Box and will never not get it. I look forward to it. Getting the mystery gifts and working with the fun yarns they send brightens my whole month! And I feel good about supporting this wonderful company too!
I often use the project sent by Darn Good Yarn to take a little vacation from whatever bigger project or pattern I am working on. The projects are small enough to be worked in a few hours, just long enough to unwind!!
