Inspiration for The Beginner Triangle Shawl Crochet Pattern
The Beginner Triangle Shawl Crochet Pattern was born out of my desire to help my mom learn to crochet. She is currently working on a summer mesh scarf but told me the next thing she wants to make is a triangle shawl for the autumn. So I worked up a fun pattern for her and I thought it would be fun to share with you too!!
This triangle shawl is one of those that isn’t so big you couldn’t also wear it as a triangle scarf in the winter under your coat. maybe leave a few buttons undone to show off your work!
Yarn for The Beginner Triangle Shawl Crochet Pattern
I made this shawl with a self striping yarn because it is a great way to get a striping effect without having to worry about changing the yarn colors and having a ton of ends to tie in at the end of the project.
I use a Caron Big Cake in the color Toffee Brickle. I had this skein hanging out waiting for a perfect project and this was it! I used the entire skein; which is about 600 yards of size 4 worsted weight, acrylic yarn. If you’d like to use something different here are a few suggestions
About the Hook
This beginner triangle shawl crochet pattern was created using a size J10 6 mm crochet hook. It is a bit larger than what the yarn suggests, but I wanted the pattern to be extra squishy with lots of drape.
I like to use an in-line crochet hook like these Susan Bates Hooks; but some people prefer the tapered shaft of a hook like this Boye hook.
If you aren’t sure of the difference between an in-line hook and a tapered hook, you can learn more from my free tutorial here.
My favorite hooks to use are these hooks with polymer clay handles attached. They are the perfect combination between ergonomic and style!

Pattern Notes
- Made with 3 rows of DC in each stitch (referred to as the solid rows) and 1 row of alternating a TC and a ch (referred to as the open row).
- Ch 2 at the start of a solid row counts as the first DC.
- Ch 4 at the start of an open row counts as the first TC and chain space. When you work the next row, you will work 1 DC into the 3rd ch (the ch space) and 2 DCs into the 2nd chain (the top of the first TC).
- Use a stitch marker in the chain that is the “top” of the stitch.
- The ch 2 in the middle of each row is the center of the shawl. It’s the spot where the tip of the triangle is. The directions inside the brackets [ ] are worked in the center (the ch 2 space from the previous row’s brackets). Use a stitch marker in this place too.
- The ch 1 spaces in the open rows count as a stitch. Work it as you would any other stitch when making the next row.
- When working a solid row, the first stitch of the row goes into the very “first stitch” next to your chain – the same one as the chain is made from.
- When working an open row, the first stitch of the row goes into the “next stitch” – not the top of the stitch the chain is from, but the stitch after.

Thank you for your pattern, Caitlyn. We are going to use the shawl pattern for our prayer shawl ministry. I thought you might like to know that I have found an error in your pattern in the section where you list the repeats near the end. I believe it is correct through row 19 and then, should it not be rows 20-23, 24-27, 28-31, 32-35, and 36 & 37?
Thank you.
Julie, Thank you for your comment and for noting the mistake. I have fixed it. I am so glad you enjoy my pattern (despite the mistake) enough to use it for your prayer shawl ministry. I hope it goes well for you!! Thank you again and have a great day!! ~Caitlin
