This gorgeous basket weave ponytail beanie is available for you to make to with this free crochet pattern. This beginner friendly design has lots of texture and offers a warm hat that won’t leave you with hat hair! Just stick that messy bun out the top of the hat! Make one for yourself today or give it as a gift. This pattern works up quick and is fun to create!
Flat Ponytail or Cold Head? Not the only choices!
I don’t particularly like the feeling of my longish being plastered to my head and neck under my hat. Even worse is when the hair under a hat causes the hat to ride up your head. Wearing your hair in a ponytail is a semi-obvious solution, but then your hat looks funny and doesn’t fit right!!! Not to mention the flat ponytail after you remove it…
A REAL solution? A ponytail a.k.a. messy bun hat that allows all those beautiful locks to fall out the top of that hat… keeping the shape of your hat (especially one you’ve worked very hard to crochet) and you don’t end up with a sweaty mess of hat hair!!! Win-Win π
Thick and Plush Ponytail Hat
This basket weave ponytail hat started as a project for a friend who works outdoors in the winter and wanted a hat to solve all her hair problems. When I was first looking for a pattern I noticed that most ponytail hat patterns called to start the top of the hat with just regular double crochets in increasing rows until the hat got big enough to work the featured pattern. My problem with this was that your standard double crochet is just not thick enough to provide the warmth that was needed by my friend for those blustery Pennsylvania winter days.
So I created my own pattern with a basket weave side and a cable look top made of front post double crochets to keep the top of the hat thick and warm. This is everyone’s instant favorite part of the hat! I hope you love this hat (and making it) as much as I loved creating it!
Beanie Crochet Pattern
Skill Level
Easy. Requires use of standing double crochet, double crochet, front post double crochet, and back post double crochet stitches.
Finished Size
This pattern is a one size fits most pattern. The finished hat should be approximately 18 inches in circumference at the base.
The shorter of the two hats is from rows 1 – 23. It is 7 inches long from the ponytail hole to the base.
The longer of the hat options works the remaining rows of the pattern provided, 24 – 28. This option produces a hat that is 8.5 inches from the ponytail hole to the base.
Materials Needed
- Worsted Weight (4) yarn. Approximately 230 yds. I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn for this pattern.
- Ponytail holder hair tie (I like to use the ouchless Goodie brand)
- H8/5 mm hook or size needed to obtain gauge – Get a polymer clay hook like mine, here!
- Tapestry or yarn needle.
- Stitch Marker – I like these locking stitch markers
- Scissors
Gauge
13 rows x 14 post stitches (doesn’t matter if front or back) = 4″ square
Stitches & Abbreviations
Standing Double Crochet (SDC) This is simply the act of joining your yarn to your hook and then working your first double crochet around another stitch or item (in this case a ponytail holder). A picture tutorial is offered in the appendix of the PDF ad-free printable version of this pattern, available on Etsy, Ravelry, and LoveCrochet.
Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC): yarn over, insert hook from front to back to front around post of indicated stitch, yarn over, pull through post (you should have 3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through first 2 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through the 2 remaining loops on the hook.
Back post Double Crochet (BPDC): yarn over, insert hook from back to front to back around the post of the indicated stitch, yarn over, pull through post (you should have 3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through first 2 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through the remaining loops on the hook.

Notes
- Rows 2 β 27 are worked in the round. Do not join at the end of the row, continue to work around the post of the next stitch.
- Join at the ends of rows 1 and 28 as indicated.
- Numbers in parenthesis at the end of each row represent a stitch count. Be sure to check your count after each row!
- I recommend using a stitch marker around the post of the last stitch in the row to keep your place. Move it up with each increasing row. Move it at least by section in the basket weave rows; you may want to move it every row in this section too.
