This “rooted in lemons” bandana cowl crochet pattern is a free and easy triangle neck warmer pattern with tons of texture and visual interest. It is a great addition to your cold weather gear that is both beautiful and functional. This free crochet pattern is customizable – offering lots of options to make it as fancy as you like!
What’s In A Name?
The inspiration for this bandana cowl crochet pattern came from some really lovely superwash merino wool I picked up a while back from Knit Picks (the green one in the photo above). Unfortunately the color has since been discontinued. I guess that’s the danger of hoarding yarn for too long before I decide to use it for a pattern, huh?
I have been loving the lemon peel stitch recently for many of my projects. It has great texture and is easy and fun to do. The trick to working this pattern properly is to make sure you are always working your single crochets in a double crochet stitch from the row below and vice versa (your DC stitches should always be worked in a SC from the row below).

Yarn & Hook Info
Unfortunately, the yarn I used for this pattern was a few years old, and has been discontinued by Knit Picks. The good news is they have lots of wonderful yarns with similar properties that would work really well for this pattern. If you don’t want to spend the money for the superwash merino, any worsted weight yarn would be a good substitute. Keep in mind when choosing this project will be around your neck. So pick something soft! These are some of the ones I recommend:
I used a size I9/5.5 mm crochet hook to work up this pattern. It was a size bigger than the size recommended on the yarn tag, but it needed to be a bit bigger to accommodate the lemon peel stitch repeat.

Bandana Cowl Crochet Pattern Notes
Rows 2-9 are worked in unjoined rounds. Rows 10 – 44 are worked in a flat, back and forth manner. Starting with row 10 you will not work all of the stitches from the previous row; some will remain unworked before you turn to work the next row. Each successive row will leave more stitches unworked when you turn. This is what creates the V shape of the bandana in the front.
The chain stitches made at the start of each row are not part of the count. Work the first DC or SC of each row in the first stich from the previous row.
An alternate beginning is provided if you do not wish to start with foundation chain stitches. Be sure your stitch count is correct before you begin. The lemon peel stitch requires an even number of stitches.
If you wish to create a smaller size, make sure you start with an even number of stitches.
This cowl is worked with a lemon peel stitch. The lemon peel stitch is a single and double crochet stitch repeat. A single crochet stitch is always worked in a double crochet stitch from the row below. Likewise, a double crochet stitch is always worked into a single crochet stitch from the row below.
If you wish to make the bandana cowl with the picots, replace the “Ch 1 and turn” directions at the start of each row from 11 to 44 with “Picot and turn”. I have included this direction to remind you.
If you wish to make the fancy edging on the top of the cowl you will work the crab stitch at the end of the pattern.

Row 1. Leaving a long tail, start foundation chain. *FSC 1 st. FDC 1 st. Repeat from * a total of 36 times. [72 sts]. Join the starting row without twisting (I recommend using the starting tail to sew the ends together),
Starting Alternative:
Row 0. Ch 72. Join with slip stitch to form a ring, be sure not to twist.
Row 1. *SC. DC. Repeat from * around, a total of 36 times. You should have 72 stitches worked only in your chain stitches so far.
Row 1 needs to be 20 inches long (no matter which starting method you used). Double count the stitches to ensure the correct amount after joining – this is essential for the lemon peel texture to work. Place a stitch marker in the last stitch and move it up as you complete each row.
Row 2. *DC. SC. Repeat from * around. Do not join at the end of the row. [72 sts].
Row 3. *SC. DC. Repeat from * around. Do not join at the end of the row. [72 sts].
Row 4 & 5. Repeat rows 2 and 3. [72 sts].
Row 6. & 7. Repeat rows 2 and 3. [72 sts].
Row 8. & 9. Repeat rows 2 and 3. [72 sts].
The rest of this cowl is worked back and forth. You will work the row and turn your work after each row is worked. Each row is 1 stitch shorter than the previous row for the remainder of the pattern.
Row 10. *DC. SC. Repeat from * for 36 stitches. You should end on a SC. Leave the other half of the stitches unworked. [36 sts].
